Jesus on the Cross – Am I worthy?
Jesus died on a Roman cross as a payment for sin. My sin . . . your sin . . . everybody’s sin. But have you ever asked yourself a very important question . . . am I worth it? I’ve been thinking about it, and I have to say that I don’t think I am worth it. Think about it for a minute.
Am I worth:
- Jesus coming to live on this earth(leaving heaven)(John 1:1-3, 14; John 18:37);
- Jesus having to experience being hungry, thirsty, tired, etc.(Matt. 4:2);
- Jesus having to feel sore muscles, sore feet;
- Jesus being dirty all the time;
- Jesus not being listened to when He spoke(people actually did not believe some of the things He said – I bet that never happened in heaven)(Matt. 17;17);
- Jesus being mocked;
- Jesus being treated like a human being(instead of God incarnate)(John 1:1);
- People plotted to kill Him on several occasions(Matt. 26:1-4; ;
- People didn’t want Him in their village(really? – you don’t want God with you?)(Matt. 8:34);
- People didn’t want Him to heal people (on the Sabbath)(Mark 3:1-6);
- People doubted Jesus was bringing a message from God(e.g. a prophet)(Matt. 13:57);
- Jesus not being believed by so many people(John 12:37);
- Jesus being judged by a Roman official(Pilate), as if anyone could sit in judgment of God(John 19:10);
- Jesus being mocked as a king(when He was the King of Kings)(Matt. 27:27-31);
- Jesus being beaten for crimes He did not commit(Matt. 27:30);
- Jesus being crucified(Matt. 27:32-35);
- Jesus being ridiculed in a variety of ways while He was on the cross(Matt. 27:38-44).
This is just a brief list . . . I’m sure you could think of all kinds of other things that Jesus had to allow Himself to be demeaned by while here. Was all of that worth saving me? And all of that was done with no assurance that I would even be saved. God provided a sacrifice for my sin; it is a free gift(grace), but I have to accept that gift. And most people don’t; they spurn it. Not interested. I don’t need it. The list goes on.
This incredible sacrifice was provided so that I might accept it, and by accepting it, I could have my sins forgiven. And even if I do accept His amazing gift(i.e. grace), will I remain faithful, or will I become unfaithful, essentially spurning that gift later in my life, effectively rendering that gift useless, and Jesus’ sacrifice pointless and unnecessary(at least for my benefit).
But if I do accept His gift(grace) and I remain faithful. my sins are forgiven, and I am benefitted by being able to spend all of eternity with God in heaven. That is definitely worth it to me, but is it worth it to God. What am I that God is mindful of me(Ps. 8:4-8)? Am I really worth all of that? In the final analysis, I don’t think I’m worth that sacrifice. The price is just too high to pay for me. Not only that, but I think the price is too high for however many people accept that gift and remain faithful. Why? We aren’t that special as human beings, and God(specifically Jesus) is way more special than all of us combined. That is my opinion on the matter. But what does God think?
The answer is quite simple: God does think the sacrifice is worth it because He made it. If He didn’t think the sacrifice was worth it, if it was too much, He would not have done it; but He did. So the next time you start thinking less of your value, remember just how much God values you.
